Justify goes wire to wire to win Triple Crown

June 9, 2018

Justify broke clean out of the gate and jumped right to the lead and never looked back in the 1 ½ mile romp, becoming the 13th Triple Crown winner in horse racing history by winning the 150th Belmont Stakes.

Mike Smith, who at 52 becomes the oldest Triple Crown jockey ever, guided the colt perfectly and didn’t have to crack a whip until the final moments of the race. Justify held off a strong push from Gronkowski, Vino Rosso and his stable mate Restoring Hope.

Bob Baffert became the second trainer to win the Triple Crown twice and Justify becomes the first undefeated Triple Crown winner.

Baffert also trained American Pharoah, who became the first Triple Crown in 37 years when he won all three races – the Belmont Stakes, Kentucky Debry and The Preakness Stakes.
